Hazel was the eighth and youngest child born to William and Eliza Young. She was born on January 13, 1915 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan.

At the age of 5 her family moved to the Steele School District in the Birch River area. Hazel would live in this District for the next 80 years.

On March 15, 1932 she married William Ross. They were married in Swan River. Five children were born to them: Viola, Arthur, Betty, Jean and Kenneth.

The family farmed through the years. After her husband, Bill, passed away in 1980, Hazel remained on the farm for a time. In 1999 with deteriorating health she moved into the Birchwood Place in Birch River, MB. Then in July 2004, she moved to the Swan River Valley Personal Care Home where she was residing until her passing.
